About SNOBS
snobs.com.au is an online magazine and social network for businesswomen. It is a resource for news, information and advice where career-driven women can connect with fresh industry contacts and keep in touch with valued friends.
SNOBS’ recognises that knowledge and communication is power. Not the kind of power you use to backstab an associate so you can smash through the glass ceiling with your high heel…
We’re steering more towards that feeling of power you get from collaborating with someone who shares your vision, initiating a solution that saves the day, or knowing you won’t need a stiff drink before opening the next bill because you’ve learned how to best manage your personal finances. And there’s nothing quite like that all-powerful feeling which results from installing a computer program, or programming an electronic device all by yourself!
Instructional or inspirational you’ll find it all here, categorised in the 7 SNOB SECTIONS.
ABOUT THE EDITOR
It’s taken me about four hours to decide if I should write this in the first or third person. Third person would probably be more professional:
Carlee Potter has worked in the media industry, predominantly as a writer, since 1996. She got her foot in the door at a Newcastle radio station before moving to Sydney to work full-time as a magazine journalist… six years later she returned home, landed another job at the same station (this time they let her on the airwaves) where she co-hosted a breakfast show for three years before jumping ship to the local, opposition radio station, for a two thousand-dollar pay rise.
In August 2007 Carlee resigned, having realised that she would probably turn thirty-five before earning - as an announcer - the same money she made as a 24-year-old.
As it turns out, writing in the third person doesn’t necessarily guarantee a professional rave, so I’ll continue by telling you (in the first person) that I am the editor, owner, director of SNOBS - Social Network for Opportunistic Businesswomen.
I absolutely loved my time on radio, particularly when I had to fill in forms or applications requiring a job description, but I’ve never been able to pull away from writing. The actual ‘writing’ part itself I often detest because I’m far from being a grammarian, graduate of punctuation, or wordsmith - and my perfectionist-streak is not very forgiving of that. It’s telling other peoples’ stories I adore, and collating useful and intriguing information.
One of the freelance writing gigs I held in 2007 was for the Sun Herald [Australian] newspaper; as the social columnist for the Hunter Extra lift-out [reporting for the Hunter Region of NSW].
In January 2008, the job lead to my first ever businesswomen’s networking event. I was only there to write about it, but it opened my eyes to a demographic of affluent, self-made women who are impressively intelligent and socially driven, both professionally and personally.
I told the business network-group’s President I was going to talk my Hunter Extra editor about the possibility of a weekly column on inspirational businesswomen.
It wasn’t long after, I received word that our local lift-out was being axed. But it was no great concern… by then my idea had evolved from a 400-word newspaper column to launching my own print publication; a magazine for businesswomen called BWMagazine [BUSINESSWOMAN Magazine].
For an extremely detailed (yet thoroughly entertaining) explanation of how BWMagazine became snobs.com.au - you can visit the blog I’ve been writing since May 2008.
My business idea stemmed from the observation and appreciation of something that already existed; the natural affiliation women have for sharing and mentoring, supporting each other and networking - in business, and in life.
In 2008 I finally grew tired of being an employee / freelance journalist - a scenario that meant my financial success, or failure, would always rely on someone else’s decision. I’d say it had something to do with nearing 30, which finally forced me to trust my own ability and decide it’s definitely time to take the reigns regarding the outcome of the rest of my career.
www.snobs.com.au is about fulfilling my passion for story-telling and delivering articles that will help you fulfill your professional passion. Education, information and inspiration… with a scope for 24-hour interaction is what you’ll find here.
