Ask Yourself: Is This an Achievable Goal?

by Lindy Asimus | SNOBSpecialist on February 9, 2010

Setting goals is not difficult, but it does require a good strategy that looks at the overall ecology of the goal. Will I create more problems for myself, or others, if I reach this goal?

And, in terms of being realistic, is your goal able to be achieved with the resources and skills currently available to you? How about accountability? What is the deadline for your goal, and what are the consequences of not following through?

The list of questions below can assist in ensuring an outcome is well-formed, and ecological; positive in all ways that impact your life.

You should consider the goals you want to set for yourself and achieve – both in the short, medium and long-term. And make it a habit to ask yourself questions like those below, in regard to any goal you set for yourself; for business or otherwise.

  • What, specifically, do you want? (state this in positive terms)
  • Where are you now?
  • What will you see, hear, feel, etc. – when you’ve reached your goal?
  • How will you know when you’ve achieved it?
  • What will this outcome get for you, or allow you to do?
  • Is it only for you?
  • Where, when, how, and with whom do you want to achieve this goal?
  • What do you have now, and what do you need to reach your outcome?
  • For what purpose do you want it?
  • What will you gain, or lose, if you have it?
  • What will happen if you reach your goal?
  • What won’t happen if you reach it?
  • What will happen if you don’t get there?
  • What won’t happen, if you don’t get there?

Tell us, what goal are you currently focused on achieving? Is it a must-have?
