I’d like to share some tips for building relationships:

I sometimes hear people say I didn’t go to that networking event because I was not interested in the speakers subject, or I thought I would not meet anyone to benefit my business.

The old rule of ‘treat others how you would like to be treated yourself’ applies here.

If we want others to take interest in our business then we must show interest in them first. Take the time to ask others about who they are and what they do. Doing this has a two-fold, sometimes three-fold benefit. Firstly, you will find what may not seem interesting is actually quite thought provoking after all. Secondly, you may think of ways that you can help them e.g. cross marketing opportunities by introducing them to other business people you know. Thirdly, they too, have the opportunity to learn more about who you are and what you do. Often that unexpectedly ends in doing business.

So my tip is, head out to those seemingly uninteresting networking events and discover how rewarding it feels to meet people with the sole purpose of ‘what is in it for them’ rather than using the ‘what’s in it for me’ approach. You just never know what might happen!

Sherynne.

Well done Sherynne, great article. You mention as “Treat others how you would like to be treated yourself’, some people know this as ying and yang, do unto others, I’ll scratch you back if you scratch mind. In BNI we call it “Givers Gain”. Its important to remeber to do it in that order – Give first. I look forward to reading more from you.
