It was Easter Sunday… I’m sitting on the couch in my tracky daks having lazed away the day with a marathon session of Dr Who (the new season; David Tennant is dreamy…)
Then I remember a stray Kinder Surprise my boyfriend left in the fridge for “us to enjoy” and excitedly proclaim, “that Kinder is mine!”
I peal open the silver foil like a woman possessed and crack open the sweet chocolate desperate to get to the real joy – the small toy inside. The plastic container makes a satisfying “pop” as I crack the seal… but I’m completely stumped as I find the Kinder is empty. No toy to be seen, just a small piece of paper.
While I unfold it – hoping for some explanation – I sulk childishly to my boyfriend; “No fair, there’s no toy!” But there, written in my man’s distinguishable handwriting are the words: “Will you marry me?”
An incredibly romantic gesture, made even more impressive when I learnt it had taken my now fiancé three eggs, a lighter and one hour to get the paper inside. What’s even more amazing is that the Kinder had sat in the fridge since the Thursday before and I hadn’t done a sneaky steal and eaten it earlier!
While my fiancé might only win most romantic proposal in my books, it is a far sight better than Sandra Bullock’s attempt in the new Touchstone picture The Proposal.
Bullock plays Margaret; a high powered book editor who faces deportation to her native Canada. Quick on her feet – as all women in business are – she announces her secret engagement to her assistant Andrew (Ryan Reynolds) who she has tormented as ‘the boss from hell’ for years.
Despite his dislike of Margaret, Andrew agrees to the engagement under certain conditions. But things get completely out of hand when his family get wind of the news and insist the newly engaged “couple” visit home. With a pesky immigration official on their tails, the unlikely couple head to Andrew’s family in Alaska where they pressure the two into an impromptu wedding – all the more complicated when Andrew’s single high school sweetheart appears.
Romantic disaster plus wedding is the formula for a hilariously fun chick flick. Bullock is every girl’s best friend when it comes to movies and Reynolds provides some amazing eye candy for the ladies – single, wed or waiting for their own memorable proposal.
