Movie Review: Ghosts of Girlfriends Past

“Who you gonna call…?”

In every girls closet, aside from a thousand shoes and a dress that she’ll never fit into again no matter how many low-fat salads, is a skeleton of a relationship that still manages to sting.

His name was Sean, my first real heartache, dumping me for a much skinnier version that he had met at the gym. For years I couldn’t look at Fitness First posters without bursting into tears and inhaling twelve Boost bars; drowning myself in more chocolate than sorrow.

Surprisingly enough, now more than thirteen years on from that disaster I called a relationship, Sean still pops into my life in one bizarre way or another. As a suggested friend on Facebook, the annual catch up with mates, or once in person at a barbecue. Fortunately I was looking hot and 20 kilos lighter… to quote Beyonce “Sean, if you liked it you shoulda’ put a ring on it!”

Regardless, his unexpected appearance online or in person does still cause a twinge of resentment and anger which has me wondering if it’s a female trait to carry regret like it’s a Prada handbag, or if the male of the species is also guilty of not letting go.

In the latest Roadshow blockbuster Ghosts of Girlfriends Past the past loves of a womanizer, played by Mathew McConaughey, return to haunt him. (Let’s face it, if you had him once you would definitely come back for seconds!)

In a twist on the classic Charles Dicken’s A Christmas Carol, Conner Mead (McConaughey) is haunted by the ghosts of his ex-girlfriends while at his younger brother’s wedding. Taking him on a hilarious journey through his romantic history, a collection of no-strings attached flings, apart from Jenny (Jennifer Garner) the one woman in his life who has always seemed immune to his charm.

This is exactly what you would expect from a McConaughey comedy – try saying that three times fast – lighthearted and feel good. Throw in a wedding, true love, and a couple of sight gags and you have a great night at the movies with the girls.

Ghost of Girlfriends Past is showing at Greater Union Cinemas now.
