Movie Review: He’s Just Not That Into You

by Kerryn Atkinson on February 12, 2009

In the 40,000 years that homosapiens have inhabited the planet a lot has been achieved. Man learned to control fire, explored space and have even tackled the task of matching socks with underwear! Yes, we certainly have come a long way…

Except in the relationship department where men have continuously shown signs of stunted growth, grabbing onto their crutch (yes, that’s with a “u”) – the classic six words they rely upon when stumbling through the task of ending a relationship…

“It’s not you, it’s me”

[It is my firm belief that female pattern-baldness is not genetic but symptomatic of having heard this phrase uttered by far too many dropkick boyfriends, resulting in tearing out ones' hair].

It’s not my job to rant and rave about how utterly devoid of meaning and emotion that sentence is, I am however trying to evoke those feelings of frustration hidden within each oestrogen blessed double-X chromosome that makes us cry into our pillows, rent The Notebook and spend millions of dollars on books that state the obvious yet somehow make us feel better about our loss…

Enter – He’s Just Not That Into You.

Penned by the gods behind Sex and the City this is one of those books you can love and hate because it could just as easily have been you who made a fortune from stating the bleeding obvious. If you haven’t read it, in short it’s a book that tells women what their best friends have been telling them for years – for free.

But there’s something quite refreshing about hearing those familiar words delivered from the mouths of an all-star cast; bringing to life what we’ve all lived through before on the big screen. He’s Just Not That Into You was released nationally, today… just in time for Valentines Day. How depressingly cute for single women of the world ;)

But chicks will flock in droves to check this flick out… the following names being just some of the reasons why: Drew Barrymore, Jennifer Connelly, Scarlett Johansson, Jennifer Aniston, Ben Affleck, Justin Long and Ginnifer Goodwin.

Ignoring the fact that Jennifer Aniston is not someone you’d take break-up advice from in a pink fit – she is someone that women secretly hope will sort themselves out and find “a nice guy”. Jennifer is paired with Ben Affleck in this comedy of relationship errors. The two are in a long term relationship that is going nowhere… sound familiar?

Not to worry if it doesn’t, the film adequately delivers on just about every relationship cliché there is: the cheating partner, falling in love with the bad guy, chasing the gay one…

If you’re in a bad relationship, newly dumped or suffering under a misogynist no-hoper then grab the girls, the chocolate bars, a skinny latte (maybe a few tissues) and enjoy He’s Just Not That Into You. It’s certainly a chance for your girlfriends to take a breather from telling you, “There’s plenty more fish in the sea,” because this film does it for you!
