Detox like Gwyneth Paltrow

by SNOBS on January 6, 2009

Need to reduce bloating, boost energy levels, clear-up your skin, lose weight and ditch the under-eye bags you’re carrying thanks to large doses of Christmas and New Year-cheer?

According to British scientists, stocking up on “detox” products will not help you. In a report by VoYS (Voice of Young Science) it was found that the word detox was being used on “everything from foot patches to hair straighteners” without any reliable or consistent explanations of what the “detox process” involved.

But it hasn’t stopped Gwyneth Paltrow from taking part in the age-old tradition of attempting to right indulgent wrongs by kick-starting the New Year with a detox diet. Albeit, her method does sound more likely to work given that it involves a bit more than buying a box/jar plastered with promises about the latest jargon-filled remedy.

The 36-year-old Iron Man actress wrote about her detox plans in the most recent email from her website – GOOP.com – where the motto is: “nourish the inner aspect”.

“I need to lose a few pounds of holiday excess. I will be suffering along with you to kickstart my year a bit lighter – good luck to us all!” Gwyneth wrote.

According to word on the web, Gwyneth’s dedication to detox will involve banning substances such as dairy, gluten, meat, shellfish, all processed food, fatty nuts, potatoes and other related vegetables, condiments, sugar, alcohol, caffeine or fizzy drinks.

Although it sounds like a shocking opposite to the “festive-season diet” we’ve become accustomed to, Gwyneth states a good reason for dedicating to it: “You can detox easily and effectively while you continue to eat as long as you are cutting out the foods and other substances that interfere with the detoxification process.”

On a final note, the actress warns anyone planning to detox to seek medical advice before starting, adding: “As I do not wish to subsist on lemon water in the middle of winter, I asked my doctor, a detox diet specialist, for guidelines. Make sure you check with your doctor before you start any detox. Drink A LOT of water.”

While I didn’t go mad over the holidays and I spent a considerable time walking around the local shopping centres and visiting Sydney I am feeling less than perfect today (first day back at work).

I think detoxing is great if you don’t have to look after a family, work, go to the gym or wish to carry on friendships. Maybe moderation over the holidays would have helped Ms Palthrow rather than the yo yo diet.

I spent New Years detoxing at a yoga camp in Byron – vegan food, loads of massages, yoga twice a day, in bed by 9.30pm on NY Eve and yoga on the beach at sunrise on New Years day… there’s something so liberating about kicking sand in your own face. I loved and hated the retreat in equal measure (I had sore muscles and craved meat but felt stronger, more energetic and flexible by the day), but now I’m back at work and stuffing my face with coffee and Turkish toast I wish I was there for all the world. The retreat I went on was with Radiance Retreats. The yoga teacher, Jessie Chapman, is great, and caters really well to beginners. Check out her website – she puts on retreats all over the shop, from Byron to Bali, Thailand and France. http://www.radianceretreats.com
