Work It Baby is SNOBS’ appreciation page for fine lookin’ Australian men who work hard, and look damn good while they’re at it. Oh yeah, and it’s also a way for ‘the men’ to promote themselves as career professionals and/or business owners…

If you’re talking to woman you’ve just met in a bar, how do you explain what you do for work?
I used to tell them I ran a web business but that was kind of ruined by Seth Rogen, in the movie Knocked Up. His character and his mates ran a “web business” devoted to celebrity nude movie scenes… so I’ve found it’s safer to elaborate a little more and explain that I run a company which provides recommendations for web sites, like what Amazon does. When you buy a book, it tells you other books “you might like”.
If you’re talking to someone who works in the I.T industry, how do you explain what you do?
I just describe it a little more in-depth; tell them it’s a web service provided via an API and something we can set up really quickly and easily. The conversation usually comes back to discussing celebrity nude movie scenes though [laughs].
Apparently “geeks” are becoming more attractive to women over time, thanks to the technology/internet revolution. Have you noticed a change?
Hmm, I haven’t paid much attention. We geeks have always known it was going to happen; we’ve just been biding our time [laughs].
Have you ever been out-smarted by a geek girl?
Oh yeah, for sure. I can be a little cocky about my intelligence so when I recently had an opportunity to play Scrabulous [a Facebook version of Scrabble] with a female friend I thought I’d handle the challenge easy. I was a bit shocked when I was handed my butt back on a plate.
What do you love that you can do online, which you used to have to leave the house for?
I’m totally in love with iTunes. I’m so over the moon that I can now buy a track within minutes, even from my iPod Touch. I’ve spent a silly amount of money on music since it was introduced to Australia.
What future developments, relating to the internet, are you most excited about?
The thing that gets me most excited is connecting people, and using those connections to do some other uber-smart things. Sounds a little like a Nokia advertisement, but I really think it’s the way things are heading.
The real key I think is personalisation, and localisation. The former is why I’m in the recommendation business, with the main aim being to present people with access to the things they love but would never have found themselves.
The latter, localisation, is all about providing things relevant to your location. I’d go into more detail but I’m working on another business idea that isn’t quite ready for publicity yet – still in stealth mode.
If you know a hottie businessman, contact SNOBS. Not only will we all get to look at the cutie you sit next to or buy lunch, printer paper, or houses from … this is also a great way for dashing gentlemen (and rugged ‘salt of the earth’ types) to score some well-deserved promotion. Go on, do him a favour and submit his details now!
